AUTHOR'S INVARIANT FOR RUSSIAN LITERARY TEXTS

COMMENTARY of Professor A.T.Fomenko
(Russia, Moscow, Moscow StateUniversity, Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics).

I suggest to the reader the results obtained by my parentsValentina Polikarpovna Fomenko and Timofei Grigor'evich Fomenko in1974-1981. This is the first English publication of their paper. Theshort Russian version of this work was published in 1983 in the book"Methods for quantitative analysis of narrative texts", Moscow, 1983,Academy of Sciences, Institute of Russian History, pp.86-109.

The main result obtained in the present paper is the finding of the"author's invariant" for Russian literary texts, which allows us todistinguish some authors and solve some problems connected withpossible plagiary. This result was obtained on the basis of somegeneral idea - statistical analysis of volume functions for narrativetexts. These volume functions were introduced in the paper [19], wherewere suggested some new empirico-statistical models for analysis ofevolution of the information in narrative texts. The development ofthese ideas can be found in the paper [20].
